Interview with Mystery and Romance author Karoline Barrett

Welcome to my blog!

Today I’m interviewing Karoline Barrett the author of the Bread and Batter Mystery series. I’ve read both Bun for Your Life #1 and Raisin the Dead #2 in the series and found them to be witty and fun to read. I love Molly, who thinks she’s more of a mystery sleuth than co-owner of a bakery in the small town of Destiny, New York. Then, there’s Detective Sean Corsino, handsome, of course, who isn’t all that crazy about Molly’s help, but. .

  1. A little birdie told me there will be a book #3 coming out soon in your Bread and Batter Mystery series. Do you know yet when that might be? First I want to say thank you for having me on your blog, Kay! I’m hoping my book will be out later this summer, if I can manage to get it finished and to my publisher!
  2. Who will be publishing book #3 for you and what can you tell us about the publisher? Summer Prescott Book Publishing is putting out book #3 in my series (and lots of other books for me as well, I hope!). They are an independent book publisher that focus on cozy mysteries as well as darker mysteries.
  3. Just have to ask what platform you favor when it comes time to promote your books? I love Facebook, but spend waaaay too much time there! It’s a double-edged sword. I’ve met a lot of readers and authors on Facebook, so that’s a good thing at least, and I also use Facebook to do giveaways, which I love doing.
  4. Now I’m curious as to how you decided to write a cozy mystery series? My former agent asked me what I like to read, and when I replied “Mysteries”, she suggested I write one, and my Bread and Batter series was born.
  5. Did you have other books or short stories published prior to writing the series? I had quite a few short stories published eons ago, and my first book, The Art of Being Rebekkah, was published back in 2013. It’s now out of print so I’m looking for another publisher.
  6. I know you work a full-time job besides writing, which I admire, so when do you find time to write and what is your process for writing your books? That’s a very good question! I usually end up writing on weekends. I try to write after work, but that doesn’t always work out!
  7. What are a couple of the most important elements of writing to you? Character development and a tight plot.
  8. What books or authors have influenced your life and writing? Oh my. So many! I love the Nancy Drew books, of course. That seems to be a pre-requisite for any mystery writer! I’m also a big fan of Joan Hess, Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich, Faye Kellerman, and Ann B. Ross. Would you believe I have never read an Agatha Christie book?
  9. What advice would you have for writers who are just starting out? Take some writing classes if you can, join writing groups, write what you feel comfortable writing, and don’t take yourself too seriously!
  10. And finally, what are your writing plans for the future? Also where can we find you on the internet. . .Website, Facebook, Amazon, etc. I hope to continue my Bread and Batter series. I’d also like to start a new series, and I have a stand-alone mystery I need to finish. I also love writing romance, so I have one of those lurking about as well! Here’s my link to my website where readers can connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Thank you, Karoline, for spending some time with us. I enjoyed every minute of it. As Karoline would say. . .

“Happy Writing!”

Never Give Up On Love by Maggie Mundy

Today, I’m featuring fellow Soul Mate Publishing author MAGGIE MUNDY. Her book NEVER GIVE UP ON LOVE is part of The Soul Mate Tree Anthology. Please read on!

Adele has found love with what she has been trained to kill.

I am old, I am ancient, my purpose is clear

To give those who are needy a treasure so dear.

They who come to my roots, touch my bark, stroke my leaves

Find the soul of their lives if they but believe.

When I call and you listen, your prize will be great

If your heart remains open and you don’t hesitate.

Do you yearn? Be you lonely? Is your time yet at hand?

Reach for me and I’ll give to you. I’m yours to command.

For your trust, for your faith, keep my secrets untold

And I’ll gift you forever, to have and to hold.

I live in Adelaide, Australia with my husband, one cat, two dogs and a snake. I have a motorbike that I would like to ride more than I do and I love walking at the beach and listening to the waves.  I’ve always loved reading all forms of fiction from high fantasy and paranormal to contemporary and decided the stories in my head needed to be written down. It was either that or start on medication. Unlike many, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer until a few years back.  I started off doing a degree in drama but soon realized my love was in writing, though there is a play lurking somewhere on my computer. My day job is as a nurse in the operating room. I believe romance can be fun to read and write, but it’s exciting to spice it up with the uncertainty that comes with suspense where the rules can be broken

Blurb. Never Give Up on Love. Maggie Mundy

Sometimes you want to die, but it’s not meant to be. Vincent became a vampire in 1847. He fights to keep humans safe from rogue vampires, but can never find love. One thing makes him go on and not find a way to die. The Soul Mate Tree saved his life with its shade and showed him a woman in the future who would need his help and show him love. He could be more than the bloodsucker he had become.

In 2015, Adele is a vampire hunter by night and a photographer by day. She has never allowed love into her life as it would only complicate things. Then she meets Vincent, and the attraction is instant.

Vincent must try and convince Adele to love him while they both fight off rogue vampires?

How will she cope when she realizes the man she has fallen in love with, is what she has been trained to kill.

She clipped another stake onto her belt just in case. As she got closer, Adele saw a man at the base of the tree. She couldn’t make out his face with the way he angled his body away from her.

He groaned as if in pain as the lights around the tree intensified. It must be a power surge or something she supposed. Maybe the poor guy was being electrocuted. She tried to remember her first aid.

“Are you hurt?” She called out. The man didn’t react and then the branches came down and covered him. That was weird. It was like the tree was alive or something. She didn’t want to leave someone hurt and in need of help and moved the branches aside. The guy was gone. She really was losing the plot. Maybe she had imagined him. As she moved away from the tree, she heard a whisper.

“Trust me, Adele. He will find you when you need him.”

Writing and Breathing!

Hello Everyone!

Maybe you’ve noticed this, too, but lately I’ve been noticing that after spending a few hours writing, I can hardly catch my breath. I’m beginning to think I get so lost in my writing that I forget to breathe. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not…guess it’s good as long as I can catch my breath again when I’ve finished writing!

I will soon have some special offers to let you know about regarding my book, Gala in the Garden. Stay tuned!!

Hope the force is with all of you as we leave June behind and enter into July!

My Dedication!

I met my grandson for lunch the other day. I’d taken my Kindle along to show him my dedication to him at the beginning of my book, Gala in the Garden. He looked at it, read it, then said, “That’s cool. That’s really cool!” I told him I thought so, too.

It was a dream come true the day I saw Gala in the Garden on my Kindle for the first time, but I will always remember the look on my grandson’s face when he saw his name in my book for the first time.

He goes to college and had brought his grades along to show me. He’s studying computers, but I noticed that one of his best grades was in his writing class. He has a great imagination for stories! You never know!!

A good time was had by both of us!

The Art of Being Rebekkah by Karoline Barrett

Welcome, Karoline, and thank you for being here. I’m looking forward to learning more about your writing career and the publication of your new book, The Art of Being Rebekkah.

First, tell us a little about yourself. Hi Kay. Thanks for having me on your blog! I started writing about ten years ago. I began with short stories and finished my first novel a little over a year ago. My husband and I live in Connecticut and we like going to museums, the beach, and baseball games. I have two sons and one grandson.

When did you first know you wanted to write? I’ve always wanted to write, but it wasn’t until I took the Long Ridge Writers Group’s “Breaking into Print” and “Novel Writing Course” that I became serious about it.

Do you work with an outline, or just write? Definitely outline! I have to know where my stories are going; especially a novel.

How did you choose the genre or genres you write in? I love reading romance, women’s fiction, and cozy mysteries, so I naturally gravitated to those genres for my writing.

Who are a couple of your favorite authors, and why? Ann B. Ross because her characters are funny and charming and Naomi Ragen, because her characters are compelling and her books draw you right in.

Tell us little bit about your book The Art of Being Rebekkah. When Rebekkah Gelles suspects her husband , Avram of not only lying to her, but also contriving not to have the children she so desperately wants and embezzling money from his business, she wants out of their marriage.

Her life gets complicated when she falls in love with detective Nick Rossi. Convinced Nick’s wrong for her–he’s not Jewish for one thing–she walks away after they share a night of passion. Nick warns her even though he loves her, he won’t beg. Their budding relationship seems to have ended.

When Rebekkah finds herself staring at a positive pregnancy test, she wavers between joy and sadness. Motherhood wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

Is any of it based on real life or is it all purely imagination? My imagination! I drew from life experiences, but the book is totally a piece of fiction.

What was your reaction on the day The Art of Being Rebekkah was published? I was very excited! It was hard to believe that my book was actually out there.

What project are you working on now? I’m working on the second book in my new cozy mystery series.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Prersevere and don’t give up! Connect with other writers and find a good editor before you query agents, or look for a publisher.

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?  Where can they follow you? I appreciate everyone who buys my book. I love to hear from readers and other writers! They can find my website here and they can email me at

Thank you, Karoline, and good luck with your new book and with your cozy mystery series.
